Car shipping from Bakersfield: the crossroads advantage

Nearly every car hauler running between Los Angeles and Northern California passes within a few miles of downtown Bakersfield. Trucks headed north take Highway 99 through town or Interstate 5 along the west side of the valley; trucks headed east to Las Vegas and beyond climb Highway 58 over Tehachapi. That traffic is why a Bakersfield pickup is usually quick to assign: a driver with an open slot is already coming through, and your car fills it.

What Bakersfield does not have is a large pool of carriers that originate here. For destinations off the main corridors, dispatch sometimes routes your car through Los Angeles or Fresno first, which can add a day or two to transit. Your coordinator will tell you up front which situation applies to your lane. For an instant number, use the quote tool above; to talk it through, call the Bakersfield desk at (661) 493-8854.

Routes and transit times from Bakersfield

The short run over the Grapevine to Los Angeles is one of the cheapest lanes in the state and can often be done the same day the car is picked up. Northbound lanes to the Bay Area, Sacramento and the Pacific Northwest run straight up the 5. Eastbound shipments go over Tehachapi Pass to Barstow and pick up Interstate 15 or Interstate 40. Where we pick up in Kern County

Door-to-door service covers Bakersfield and the surrounding communities, from the farm towns up the 99 to the mountain and desert communities on the 58 and the 14. Most Bakersfield neighborhoods are easy for a full-size car hauler: wide streets, cul-de-sacs with room to turn, and plenty of flat ground. Rural addresses need a little planning. If your car is at a ranch down a dirt road, at an orchard shop or in a gated community with a weight-limited entrance, tell your coordinator, and the driver will meet you at the paved road or a nearby lot.

Heat, fog and the Grapevine

Three local conditions shape how we plan Bakersfield shipments through the year.

  • Summer heat. July and August afternoons routinely pass 100°F. Drivers prefer early morning pickups, and an enclosed trailer is worth considering for leather interiors, vinyl wraps and anything with a sensitive finish that will spend a week in the sun crossing the Mojave.
  • Tule fog. From December through February, dense ground fog settles in the valley and visibility on the 99 and the 5 can drop to a few hundred feet. Carriers slow down or wait it out, and a pickup window in those months may shift by a day.
  • Tejon Pass closures. The Grapevine closes a few times each winter for snow or ice. When it does, southbound trucks hold at the bottom of the grade until Caltrans reopens it. Your coordinator watches the forecast and will tell you if a closure could affect your delivery.

Trucks, lifted rigs and farm equipment

Kern County ships more pickups and lifted trucks than any other region we serve. Those vehicles need a little extra planning. A lifted F-250 or Ram 2500 is taller and heavier than a sedan, which can rule out the top deck of a standard carrier and may require a single-level or flatbed truck. Oversized tires, roof racks and aftermarket bumpers all add dimensions that dispatch needs to know about before assigning a truck. When you quote a truck, give the accurate lift height and tire size; it keeps the price honest and avoids a driver arriving with the wrong equipment. We also move side-by-sides, UTVs and small farm vehicles when they are on a trailer or can be driven onto a hauler; ask the desk.

Military shipments near Bakersfield

Edwards Air Force Base at Rosamond, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake at Ridgecrest and NAS Lemoore up the valley all generate PCS moves that route through the Bakersfield desk. Carriers cannot enter the installations, so pickups are arranged at an off-base address or outside the gate. Give your coordinator the report date and we plan the pickup window backward from it. Active duty and veterans receive a military rate.

What affects your Bakersfield price

Distance comes first, but on short lanes the fixed cost of loading and unloading dominates, which is why Bakersfield to Los Angeles costs far more per mile than Bakersfield to Chicago. After distance, the biggest movers are vehicle size and weight, open versus enclosed, whether the car runs, and timing. Give the carrier a flexible pickup window and you give dispatch more trucks to choose from, which lowers the rate. Spring and summer are peak season as relocations and CSU Bakersfield move-outs pile up; late fall and winter are usually softer, except for the few days a fog or pass closure compresses the schedule.

Open or enclosed from the valley

Most vehicles leaving Bakersfield ride open, and for a daily driver that is the right choice. Enclosed service makes sense for the valley's restored classics and hot rods, for show trucks with expensive paint and wraps, and for anything headed across the desert in summer that you would rather keep out of the sun and the dust. Enclosed costs about 40 to 60 percent more and comes with a liftgate and soft tie-downs.

Getting ready for the truck

Wash the car so the inspection is accurate, keep fuel to a quarter tank, remove anything loose and any toll tags, and take photos of every side. If the car has sat through a summer, check the battery and tire pressure the day before; a car that won't start or roll needs a different truck. Have a key ready and confirm the meeting point if you are on a rural road. Your coordinator sends updates at pickup, in transit and on delivery day.

Bakersfield FAQ

Bakersfield car shipping FAQ

How much does it cost to ship a car from Bakersfield to Los Angeles?
The run over the Grapevine is one of the least expensive lanes in California, typically $300 to $450 on an open carrier for a standard vehicle. It can often be completed the same day the car is picked up.
Can you ship a lifted truck from Bakersfield?
Yes. Give us the lift height, tire size and any aftermarket bumpers or racks when you quote so dispatch assigns a truck with the right deck height and weight capacity. Oversized trucks usually price above a standard pickup and may ship on a single-level or flatbed carrier.
Why might my Bakersfield shipment route through Los Angeles first?
Few carriers originate in Bakersfield. For lanes off the main I-5, 99 and 58 corridors, dispatch sometimes moves your car to a Los Angeles or Fresno hub to catch a truck headed to your destination. It can add a day or two; your coordinator will tell you in advance if it applies.
Do carriers pick up at rural addresses in Kern County?
Yes, with some planning. Full-size haulers cannot use dirt roads, weight-limited bridges or tight gated entrances. If your car is at a ranch, orchard or remote property, we arrange a meeting point at the nearest paved road or parking lot.
Does winter fog or the Grapevine affect shipping from Bakersfield?
Occasionally. Tule fog can slow carriers on the 99 and the 5 from December through February, and Tejon Pass closes a few times each winter for snow. Either can shift a pickup or delivery by a day. We monitor conditions and keep you informed.
